Practice Write 2/11/16
A topic is a subject people can discuss whether in person or in writing. A subject is not necessarily a debatable issue. However, it is more of a conversation starter between people with different view points. On the other hand an issue is a subject that is currently relevant in society and is debatable. There will be people with different opposing view points trying to argue why they believe their opinion is right. The issue I plan on focusing my essay on is the increasing amount of small businesses being over run by big corporations. I will talk about how this is affecting society and potentially how small businesses can sustain their work. As of right now, I have not done any reseated on this topic. However, I do believe I will find a lot of information about this because of its relevance to most societies and growing concern.

Mariel- I think this is an interesting topic, and as I suggested to Briea and Shane, you may start by asking about the current day relevance of the American Dream and maybe the different perspectives surrounding that. You may also approach the topic from a consumer point of view-why is the survival of small businesses important for consumers and consumer choice? How do small business help create sustainable local economies, by creating jobs, community ties/hubs...? Maybe, what do small businesses have to do with community? All of these are inquiry questions that you could relate back to sustainability.
ReplyDeleteAre you connected to this topic? Do you really want to research this throughout the semester? Or are there other issues out there, like racism in education, racial bias in testing like the SATs? Or sweatshop labor in places as close as Mexico, Central America? Or prison labor which is basically slavery, where they work for companies like Victoria's Secret making less than$1/hour making $100 bras...or gang violence and how we can reduce it in ways that don't cause more violence with police... Just throwing out ideas in case something sparks an interest. My impression from your writing so far is that you are pretty on top of it and probably have some things to say about some issues maybe a little more significant in terms of social justice than small businesses. But I'm just throwing it out there, for my benefit to be able to read about some more interesting issues also, but ultimately your semester long topic is your choice.
I hope that was actually helpful! Have a good weekend, Dan
